The Lectern.

The lectern is a brass eagle with the inscription "In memory of Charles Verney Shuckburgh for 31 years Rector of this Parish. This lectern was presented by his widow Eliza Lucy Shuckburgh" and was given in 1901. [Charles and Eliza are buried in the tomb just outside the porch door].

Most lecterns are either in the shape of an eagle or a pelican, and the Bible rests on its outspread wings. The eagle was thought to be able to look unflinchingly into the heart of the sun, so in the same way, the words from the Bible are an unflinching revelation of God.
